OzU organizes various events to enhance the University’s knowhow in sustainability and promote the dissemination of knowledge in this field. One of these events is the “Sustainability Talks" seminar series. The series addresses the multidimensional topic of sustainability with invited speakers from different disciplines. The impact of the seminar series is augmented with the participants and interactive discussions. In this page both the future and past events are provided. Looking at Climate Trauma Through a Gender Lens | Sustainability Talk Series

In our Sustainability Speech titled “Viewing Climate Trauma Through a Gender Lens”, we hosted Deniz Gündoğan İbrişim, who continues her gender-focused studies as a member of the Marie Curie Academy at Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences SU Gender Center.
In this speech, we talked about a different form of violence and trauma, climate violence and climate trauma that this term suggests, based on the definition of the term Anthropocene and its initial scenarios. While discussing climate violence and climate trauma, which in most cases is not flashy, spectacle and sudden, and the forms of grief and mourning it indicates, we touched on its urgency within the framework of sustainability. More importantly, we underlined that we cannot talk about a climate trauma that is free from all social, economic, geographical, class, ethnic and gender-based distinctions, and we looked at climate trauma from a gender perspective.
Advanced and Recycling Oriented Production Practices | Sustainability Talk Series

Thinking About Our Common Future Through Art
Orientation Day 2021
The 2021 Orientation Program was held online this year due to the pandemic. As the Sustainability Platform, we held 7 simultaneous online workshops under the title of "Thinking Our Common Future Through Art" within the framework of the Earth Hour events program.
We talked about the issues that shape our common future, such as poverty, education, hunger, gender equality, poverty, the city, etc., starting with the meaning of art in the age of climate crisis, through the works in the corridors of the university and contemporary art movements.

The pilot study of the 2C1N Project, for which we are the academic partner as OzU Sustainability Platform, has been completed.
The launch event of the report prepared by 90 high school students, of which Özyeğin University and Zorlu Holding are stakeholders, to convey their demands for change to international decision makers, took place at Özyeğin University on August 12, World Youth Day. “Can a University Student Prevent an Ancestral Seed from Extinction?” we held special for World Environment Day. In the speech titled, we listened to Fırat Karakurt, a 2nd year Computer Engineering student at our university, and his story in pursuit of ancestral seeds unique to him and the region he lives in. In this story, we talked about the many dimensions of his journey from why he set out after the seed, to the fight against waste, from the difficulties he faced, to his future plans regarding this issue.
Sustainability Talks Inspiration Series – 5 Designing Sustainability Through Experience

We continued the Sustainability Talks - Inspiration Series with the speech “Designing Sustainability Through Experience”. Weaving artist Fırat Neziroğlu, who graduated from Dokuz Eylül University Textile and Fashion Design Department, carried our cultural heritage from the local to the universal, was the guest of this talk. With the artists participating in many art institutions and fashion weeks such as New York Fashion Week, Christie's Auction House and Lausanne Textile Biennial; We talked about the effects of functional sustainable art, cultural heritage, traditions and customs on art and fashion.

We continued the Sustainability Talks - Inspiration Series with the talk of “Sustainable Fashion and Ethical Production Approach”. Serra Türkün, who is the Design Team and Sustainability Team Leader at Reflect Studio, which continues its work in different fields such as Barbican Centre, Istanbul Biennial, WWF and Amnesty International, was the guest of this interview. Sustainable fashion, ethical production approach, textile industry and new initiatives in this field were discussed as the focal points of the conversation.

We continued the Sustainability Talks - Inspiration Series with the talk titled 'Locality and Universality - An Empowerment Story Created from the Traces of Seeds and the Plain of the Soil'. The guest of our talk, İlhan Koçulu, shared a community-based empowerment experience that started in Kars's Boğatepe Village and inspired us all with its local impact. Food security, the fight against poverty, the empowerment of women, the operability of ancient agricultural methods and organization were the main topics of the conversation.

Human Oriented Design Workshop - Biophilic Design Workshop Program

Biophilic Design Workshop titled 'Human-Centered Design' took place on Tuesday, December 17 at OzU X. After the opening presentation by Neslihan Küçükaslan from Interface, in which she emphasized biophilia, biophilic design and the importance of biophilic design in the future, the students were divided into groups and started to apply the biophilic design principles they chose on the prepared floor plan. The workshop ended with students presenting their models and sketches.
Sustainability Workshop - 'Climate Change and Business: Risk or Opportunity for Companies?' Certified Workshop Program

The Sustainability Workshop titled “Climate Change and the Business World: Risk or Opportunity for Companies?” was held at OzU X on Saturday, December 14th. After the presentations of Professional Development and Sectoral Training Coordinator Melda Alpaydın, Sustainability Platform Training Coordinator Dr Damla Durak Uşar and TSKB Escarus Sustainability Consulting CEO Dr Kubilay Kavak, the groups started case studies. At the end of the day, each group presented their case studies and the workshop ended with the presentation of certificates.

Sustainability Workshops 1 - Socio-Technical Interactions in Transportation | Human x Vehicle x Mobile Technologies

On October 31, World Cities Day, the Socio-Technical Interactions in Transportation Workshop was held with the Özyeğin University Sustainability Platform. With this workshop, it was aimed to close the gap caused by communication problems between stakeholders in the adaptation process of urban transportation technologies. Diversity of participants in the field of urban transportation and mobility was targeted. 4 of the 18 participants were IMM; 10 sectors; All 3 were senior representatives of the NGO. Sector representatives also showed diversity within themselves. Ausis, Zuppin, Reserve, Zipcar, E-charge, İDO, İETT, Oto Koç, Volvo, Siemens Mobility Transportation Systems.
The workshop was conducted by Ebru Tekin Bilbil, Okan Pala, Özlem Bahadır, Damla Durak Uşar.

6 October 2019 - World Food Day Conference
16 October, the founding date of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is celebrated as World Food Day every year. In this context, Özyeğin University organized the "Agriculture in Turkey" sub-targets within the scope of No Hunger (Sustainable Development Goal 2), which aims to end all forms of hunger and malnutrition by 2030 and ensure that all people, especially children, have adequate nutrition throughout the year. A conference titled "Food and Changing/Unchanging Practices" was held. At the conference, the relationship between different aspects of agricultural transformation and food systems in Turkey was examined.
6th Local and Rural Development Specialization Training Certificate Program
9-13 September 2019
The “Local and Rural Development Specialization Training Certificate Program” was held between 9 - 13 September in cooperation with the Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation and Özyeğin University. The certificate program, which we organized for the 6th time this year, hosted 3 panels, 2 workshops and 1 technical trip, along with the lectures given by academics who are competent in their fields.
At the end of the program, the participants were awarded the Özyeğin University Local and Rural Development Specialization Training Certificate.

The Sustainability Talks seminar series was organized by Özyeğin University's Sustainability Platform as part of our university's 10th Anniversary Events. The guest of the tenth speech of the series, Bilgi University Dean of Social and Human Sciences Faculty and Director of Migration Studies Application and Research Center of the same university, Prof. Dr. Pinar Uyan Semerci. Prof Uyan Semerci, in his speech in English, focused on the concept of human development and evaluated Turkey within the framework of this concept. In this assessment, she shared her knowledge on vulnerable groups (eg children in the context of child poverty and child labour).

In his speech, Mr. Betts gave information about current environmental problems and focused on the use of alternative energy to solve these problems. Then he explained what the business world can do about alternative energy.

Sütaş was our guest at the ninth Sustainability Talks organized by Özyeğin University Sustainability Platform as part of our university's 10th Anniversary Events. Fatma Can Sağlık, Corporate Relations Coordinator of the company, which has important studies in the field of sustainability, emphasized the importance of sustainability by mentioning climate change and its impact on the agricultural sector. Then, describing Sütaş's sustainability approach and activities, Mr. Sağlık explained how Sütaş's integrated business model from Farm to Table also enables the transition to circularity and bioeconomy in dairy farming.

The seventh of the Sustainability Speeches organized by Özyeğin University's Sustainability Platform within the framework of our university's 10th Anniversary Events, which aims to deepen our knowledge of sustainability and expand our horizons by addressing sustainability with its different dimensions, was held with Gülseren Onanç's "In the World and in Turkey" event specific to the International Women's Day events.
In her speech, Gülseren Onanç talked about inequalities and injustices against women in the world and in Turkey, and talked about the obstacles in front of women in participating in politics. Afterwards, she explained why the rising wave of women in the world is important and underlined the responsibilities of individuals.

The Sustainability Seminar Series organized by TÜSİAD – ÖzÜ Sustainable Development Forum continues with TÜSİAD Deputy Secretary General for Sustainable Development, Entrepreneurship and Investment Environment Melda Çele. Melda Çele informed all our students with her speech on “The Roles of Non-Governmental Organizations and the Business World and Cooperation in Reaching Global Goals” at 10:45 on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at OzU-X Building, B27 Design Area. Answering the questions asked by our students after the presentation, Mr. Çele's presentation ended after a pleasant conversation with our students.
Seminar on Economics of Policies to Combat Climate Change in the Field of Design

Assoc. Dr. Voyvoda delivered a very enlightening speech on the Economics of Combating Climate Change Policies on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at 14:00, at OzU-X Building, B27 Area. Assoc. Dr. In his speech, Voyvoda made a macroeconomic evaluation for Climate Friendly Development in Turkey and sought answers to the following questions, starting from the need for Turkey to gradually join the global trend towards reducing the carbon intensity of the economy in the period following the Paris Agreement:
What are Turkey's responsibilities within the scope of the 2oC target? What is the emission reduction target? What could it be?
What should be the elements of the policy package to be followed in order to achieve this reduction target?
What will be the economic effects of these policies in the medium-long term?
Plastic Pollution in the Oceans Seminar

The Sustainability Seminar Series started on World Water Day with Douglas Woodring, known for his groundbreaking projects on environmental issues and one of the leading names drawing attention to plastic pollution in the oceans. Douglas Woodring, in his speech, revealed the extent of plastic pollution in the oceans with striking examples. He then revealed the sources of this pollution and explained what he and the Ocean Recovery Alliance, of which he is the chairman, are doing to solve this problem and how everyone can contribute to this process. The seminar ended with a very productive question and answer session.
