About the Project:
This project investigates the status, demographic and economic characteristics and macroeconomic effects of immigrants in Turkey which has been exposed to an immense influx of immigration in the last decade. It reveals the main components of a national immigration policy that promotes social prosperity. First of all, demographic characteristics of immigrants such as education level, occupation and age will be determined by use of micro-data sets. Later, social expenditures made by the government for the economic incorporation and socialization of immigrants will be thoroughly calculated. Taking into account these expenditures and the contributions of immigrants to the tax revenues throughout their careers, the net contribution of immigration masses to the state budget will be analyzed. The calculation of the overall balance of the established dynamic, macro-economic model and the simulation of this equilibrium will reveal the effects of immigrants on wages, capital gains, employment and productivity in the local economy. Also, this project will examine the future of the social security and pension systems in Europe which suffer from budget deficits owing to the rapidly increasing population over 65, and the contributions of young immigrant employment to the sustainability of these systems.
